In many Christian traditions, the christening shawl (sometimes called a baptism robe or blanket) is placed over the child during the baptism. It symbolises being clothed in purity and new life.

The christening candle is lit during the ceremony to symbolise the light of Christ entering the child’s life. Parents or godparents usually hold the candle during the ceremony. Many families relight it on special occasions, like the child's Confirmation.
